Emiko FireResearch: Understanding Interaction Specificity Among Bcl-2 ProteinsThe Bcl-2 protein family is important in regulating apoptosis via protein-protein interactions. Bcl-2 family members can be pro-apoptotic or anti-apoptotic and classified into three subfamilies: the anti-apoptotic Bcl-2-like, the pro-apoptotic Bax-like, and the pro-apoptotic BH3-only subfamilies. I have examining the specificity of the interactions between anti-apoptotic proteins (BCL-XL and MCL-1) and the BH3 regions of pro-apoptotic proteins. I use X-ray cystallography and mutant binding studies to explore these specificity determinants. CollaboratorsKeating lab: Stefano Gulla and Sanjib Dutta |
